Weird Google UK SERP Updates

Posted:

Google UKThe most recent updates to Google.co.uk’s search engine result pages this month have been troubling. Google UK searchers are noticing many more rubbish web pages being displayed on the first page for completely irrelevant queries. Some UK SEOs are suspecting that the increased rankings are due to higher numbers of inbound links, as opposed to higher qualities of them.

And it gets worse. One webmaster in the UK who used to rank first for his main keywords is now sitting in third place. The runner-up listing is one of those irrelevant web pages, and holding spot number one is a 404 (page not found)!

As for Google SERPs as a whole (beyond its UK division), it appears that there are fewer results showing up for specific queries. There definitely isn’t a decline in the number of websites on the Internet, and as far as I know, their hasn’t been any explosions in any of their datacenters either - unlike ThePlanet. :P

So what gives? Well, webmasters and SEOs are speculating that stricter quality control measures are being enforced at Google, and teams like the human editorial staff are having more of an impact with siphoning out garbage sites. In fact, some people are noticing an increased number of hits from Mountain View, California IPs, hinting to recent editorial activity to their website.

  1. Well it simply proves that everyone makes mistakes, even Google :)

  2. I can hardly blame Google for wanting to filter results to the best of their ability, after all they are a business and want to make money. It almost seems like SEO might be more about search engine pandering instead of manipulating.

  3. Google’s time is short. Their per share price will burst soon.
