Wal-mart Offers Search Marketing Services

This next story is quite an eye-opener. Wal-mart’s Sam’s Club offers search marketing services including search engine optimization and pay-for-performance (paid listings). Here’s a link to their website.
Now I understand that Wal-mart has grown from household supplies to electronics and even groceries, but search engine marketing is way beyond their core competencies. Although, with as much money as they have and the incredible growth momentum, you would think they could get it right… right? Think again.
Toilet paper and oranges don’t require nearly as much expertise as search marketing, and a quick look at their website demonstrates this.
Under “Search Engine Optimization”, they say they will
…have your website [hand] submitted to the major search engines…
Submitting to the major search engines?
Any half-decent SEO would know that getting some decent backlinks is much more effective for getting crawled and indexed, not to mention organic ranking. Link-building is also a major part of SEO and neglecting that aspect is simply irresponsible and amateurish. I wholeheartedly hope that not too many people fall prey to Wal-mart’s inept services.
