Google’s Search-Based Keyword Tool (Beta)
Posted: December 8th, 2008
One of the primary objectives of maintaining an online presence is to generate traffic that lead to sales from new and existing customers. Chances are that they use search engines somewhere in their buying process, which is why search engine optimization is an important aspect that should be considered during web development. Google has recently introduced a new keyword-research tool called the “Search-based Keyword Tool.”
(Additional webmaster tools can be found on our Resources page.)

Google’s Search-based Keyword Tool (SKT) is similar to WordTracker (WT) and Trellian’s Keyword Discovery (KD), in that it serves to generate ideas for keywords to optimize for - although Google is hoping that you use these keywords to bid on in AdWords. The SKT compiles lists of search queries that it believes are relevant to users, and is organized by categories and subcategories. These help in finding keyphrases and creating more appropriate landing pages and content too.
The SKT also estimates the monthly search volume for each keyphrase, which is reminiscent to the AdWords Keyword Tool. Unlike the AdWords Keyword Tool, however, the SKT actually suggests bid amounts instead of simply offering a graphical bar to represent competition from other advertisers.
Another difference between the Search-based Keyword Tool (SKT) and the AdWords Keyword Tool, is that the SKT gives keyword ideas based on the content of your website. It also identifies keywords that are excluded from your AdWords account, as long as you associate your website to your AdWords account.
