After over a year of acquiring JotSpot, a software company that specialized in enterprise social software, Google has finally launched Google Sites - a renaissance of JotSpot with Google branding.

Google Sites is a direct competitor to Microsoft’s SharePoint as a platform for creating community portals with an emphasis on sharing, collaboration and concurrent development. Its main focus is on company Intranets, although it could be used to help manage any collaborative project.

There isn’t anything that particularly stands out about Google Sites. For the most part it’s just another WYSIWYG, click-and-drop type interface with some templates and the ability to embed pictures and video. It’s similar to Google Personalized Homepages (iGoogle), except it has permissions sets to define who can access, modify and read the content.

At this time, Google Sites is only open to Google Apps users.

    I’ve never tried SharePoint but Google Sites does give off a drag-and-drop type feel, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it were more complicated in its CMS/portal backend - if it exists.

    @Anna:
    You’re very welcome. :)
