Google Insights for Search Tool
Posted: August 7th, 2008
New this week to the delight of many search marketers and SEOs is the Google Insights for Search tool. This new tool comes on the heels of Google Trends for Websites and Google Ad Planner which were both released in late July, yet still manages to impress advertisers by providing very specific information, patterns, and emerging trends. Google Insights for Search is uniquely empowered in its ability to drill down data to find precise subsets of figures. More importantly, it’s very likely to be able to find comprehensive information that is useful to you.
With Google Insights for Search, you can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames.
Search Volume Graph
The first thing you’ll see is a graph showing the search volume for the search term in question. The following statistics are for the search term “obama,” in the region of Ontario, Canada for the past 12 months. Click the image to enlarge.
Locations Filter
Search engine optimizers engaging in local SEO will find the locations filter particularly helpful. You can filter results geographically by country, and further drill down by sub-regions such as provinces or states. Numerical values are then shown for the top cities within the sub-regions, along with a map to graphically display these cities. Below is a screenshot (click to enlarge) for the search term “obama” with the location set to Ontario, Canada. These geographic distributions are valid for the past 12 months.

This section gives insight as to the top searches and rising searches for your keyword or keyword phrase.
