Document Size Too Large

Every week I log into my Webmaster Tools account to look out for potential crawling or indexing issues with my sites. Usually, I will also check to see if the newer pages are getting indexed, as well as quickly look over whether any new links have been found. None of these sites are designed for mobile browsing, although some are very light-weight. Yes, Webmaster Tools is also very helpful for those creating (or simply optimizing) web pages for mobile platforms.

Recently, a new warning was found within Webmaster Tools’ mobile error/warnings section. It’s stated rather simply as “Document Size Too Large.” Unfortunately, no official documentation exists from Google regarding how large a document needs to be before it’s considered “too large.” The original message isn’t the most forthcoming message either, so let’s dig deeper to figure out where “too large” lies.

A WebmasterWorld moderator (jdMorgan) believes that the limit falls in the range of 21kB and 30.3kB, and it would seem that his lower limit in the right area. According to this page from the Word Wide Web Consortium (W3C) website,

PAGE_SIZE_LIMIT Machine Test: Measure the total size of markup and images for a page; check that it does not go over the allowed size for the device - 20 kilobytes for the Default Delivery Context.

Basically, the maximum document size for mobile pages should be kept at 20kB or less. However, it’s important to keep this in context. This rough outline was conceived over a decade ago (1996), and this standard is quite dated for practical purposes.
